In 2024, I was privileged to take on the role of Teacher Research Assistant in Communication Design at Otago Polytechnic. This opportunity allowed me to work closely with a diverse group of individuals, including both lecturers and students, which significantly influenced my growth as a designer. Not only did I gain valuable insights from collaborating with the lecturers, but I also learned a great deal from the students themselves.
Working with first- and second-year Communication Design students gave me the chance to give back to the institution where I once studied. My role involved providing constructive feedback on their work and designs, assisting with technical challenges that tested and expanded my own skills, and encouraging them to think critically and push the boundaries of their ideas.
Each day was dynamic and engaging, filled with meaningful conversations as I guided students through the design process, helped resolve obstacles, and supported them in completing their projects and workbooks to a high standard. I also contributed by reviewing and providing feedback on their workbooks and assisting lecturers in moderating student submissions.
The versatility of this role was one of its highlights. Some days were hands-on, helping students with tasks like painting, weaving, or printing their designs. Other days, I focused on creating marketing collateral for open days or organizing and displaying student work throughout the building. This experience not only enhanced my technical and creative skills but also deepened my passion for design education and mentorship.
